The Connectivity Challenges
Facing Transport Operators

Passenger expectations have changed. WiFi is no longer a nice-to-have on public transport — it is expected. But delivering reliable, fast connectivity on a moving vehicle, across rural routes with inconsistent mobile coverage, is a genuinely complex engineering challenge.

Challenge 1
Moving Vehicles,
Inconsistent Coverage

A bus travelling through rural Wales or the South West passes through dozens of different signal environments on a single route. Maintaining a consistent, reliable WiFi connection for passengers throughout that journey requires a multi-network approach — not a single SIM card.

Challenge 2
Passenger Expectations
vs Rural Reality

Passengers travelling on rural routes expect the same quality of WiFi experience they get in an urban area. Delivering that on routes through areas with poor or no mobile coverage requires technology — like dual WAN broadband - that was not available to transport operators until recently.

Challenge 3
Fleet Management
& Live Information

Beyond passenger WiFi, operators need GPS tracking for fleet management, real-time location data for live timetable systems, and reliable data connections for onboard ticketing and information systems. All of this needs to work simultaneously, reliably, every day.

Transport Connectivity
Passenger WiFi and Fleet Technology That Works on the Move

Dragon WiFi have delivered some of the most technically demanding transport connectivity projects in Wales — including the UK's first Starlink-powered bus, operated in partnership with Peplink on a rural Welsh route.

This project demonstrated that it is now possible to deliver 150Mbps WiFi on rural bus routes that previously had no viable connectivity solution.  Our transport solutions combine multiple connectivity technologies - Starlink satellite broadband, 4G bonding and 5G - to maintain a consistent, fast connection on moving vehicles, even on routes through areas with poor or no mobile signal.

Beyond passenger WiFi, we integrate GPS tracking, live timetable data feeds and onboard information systems — giving operators the fleet visibility and passenger information tools they need to run a modern transport operation.

Why Choose Dragon WiFi For Transport?

Delivered the UK's First Starlink Bus

In partnership with Peplink and wavemobile, Dragon WiFi delivered the UK's first Starlink-powered passenger bus on a rural Welsh route — demonstrating 150Mbps WiFi where no viable connectivity previously existed. This is not a theoretical capability.

We Understand The Challenges

The topology and "not spot" challenges we see on rural commuter routes and public transport are the same across Wales, Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset. We have over a decade of finding solutions where others would walk away.

Certified Starlink Installers

For businesses in rural or semi-rural locations where fixed-line broadband cannot meet demand, we offer certified Starlink installation as part of a full connectivity solution.
