Client: Farm and Residential Dwelling

One connection with over 10 times the speed feeding 4 buildings.
One of our business clients asked us if he was able to get better connectivity at his farm and its associated buildings.
His current copper circuit was delivering less than 20Mbps and was affected by wind and rain, in which sometimes the connection would drop completely.
In rural locations, where 4G is not always readily available, this creates a risk to elderly and vulnerable people.
After looking at the available infrastructure available to the farm (which was at the bottom of a valley), we could only see an LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite solution as the way to provide a strong level of signal.
The Challenge: One Connection to Multiple Places
The farm had three staff members who lived in close proximity. The farmer, his son and another member of staff.
As they would all be in a single place at a time, it was more cost-effective to deploy a centralised connection and then connect the other buildings via a series of small wireless links. This meant that the farm and three houses could all access 200Mbps speeds from Starlink.
In rural areas, trees can sometimes be impactful on solutions like this, but by providing a free survey, we were able to assess the line of sight between the various buildings to create a network that allowed for full bandwidth transfer.
The Solution: Build a small Fixed Wireless Network
With a desktop and quick on-site survey, we were able to see enough line of sight to be able to build a small FWA (Fixed Wireless Network) for the buildings.
Each has its own private and secure network, but with a shared internet connection. (We effectively built a mini exchange.) using the most centrally located property.
Each network has its own router, wireless SSID and password and none of the networks are able to communicate with each other.
We also built a core router which we have 24 access to in a waterproof enclosure which allows effective maintenance without disturbing any of the clients
One Connection Serving Multiple needs
Now the 4 properties are able to get access to the internet to serve multiple needs.
The farm can upload and access DEFRA reports and information quickly, and can access business speeds for any accounting and business needs.
There is also real-time CCTV monitoring installed, which is now 100% reliable and is better for farm and machinery security and livestock monitoring.
In the properties, after a hard day on the farm, the staff can stream movies and music, FaceTime family and friends and enjoy the benefits of what the internet should be in the 21st Century!
